Forest Blessings Radio Drama Launched Across the Mano River Union

“Forest Blessings,” a 24-episode radio drama series produced by the West Africa Biodiversity and Climate Change (WA BiCC) Program, has officially launched in the Mano River Union (MRU) countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Côte d’Ivoire.

The drama was created to raise awareness about forest conservation issues, including deforestation, forest degradation, and biodiversity loss. These environmental threats have adversely impacted the Gola, Ziama-Wonegizi-Wologizi, and Tai-Grebo-Krahn-Sapo transboundary forest landscapes found within the MRU. Similar to the WA BiCC-produced radio series Watasay Ston, this new series both educates and entertains listeners as it seeks to bring about behavior change. Based in a fictional cross-border community called Mano N’Zela located at the edge of a national park, the series uses colorful characters, including a paramount chief, hunters, artisanal miners, loggers, bushmeat sellers, and farmers, to help listeners understand the importance of forest conservation for both plant, animal, and human life.

The broadcast is scheduled from June to September 2020 in Sierra Leone, Cote d’Ivoire, and Liberia—with Guinea soon to air episodes as well.  The one-hour show is being broadcast weekly and includes a 15-minute radio drama and 45-minute call-in show with an expert or key stakeholder calling in to answer questions asked by other callers based on the content/message of the drama episode. Altogether, the series has been produced in seven languages (Liberia Simple English, Krio, French, Mende, Lorma, Krahn and Standard English).
