West Africa Rosewoods Synthesis Report: Conservation Status, CITES Compliance, and Priorities for Protecting Rosewoods in West Africa

The distribution of rosewood species varies across West Africa, and discrepancies in knowledge, information, or data exist between peer-reviewed, published information and what can be verified by talking with experts and locals. Generally, Pterocarpus erinaceus is distributed in West Africa, between Latitudes 7o N and 14o N. At higher latitudes, the species tends to be stunted, comprising smaller trees, and another species, Pterocarpus lucens, becomes more abundant. In a similar way, southward beyond Latitude 7o N, Dalbergia spp. P. Santalinoides .and other species, become more abundant as forests transition from dry Guinea-savannah to moist Guinea-Congolian.
